Creating Your Own Mediterranean House Design

When considering building a home, the most popular style is the Mediterranean house design.

There are many features of this type of blueprint that are unique and often mirror the styles of homes found in Italy, Spain and France. However, a home does not have to sit in the middle of Europe to have that same sort of appeal and Mediterranean house designs are popping up all over. The ironic thing about many Mediterranean style houses is to give them the appearance that they have been there for centuries such as the original homes do.

Exterior Characteristics

Some of the most common characteristics of Mediterranean style homes are:

  • arch frames around the doors and windows,
  • stucco siding,
  • a low pitched tile roof,
  • wrought-iron balconies
  • and columns.

The tile roof is typically red and there is generally a courtyard including a deck or patio in the plans.

These characteristics are common of many new luxury style homes and mansions and are very similar to Spanish inspired home plans.

People wishing to have a home built to incorporate this type of architectural structure and design are among many who consider this a contemporary feel to the place they will call home, also known as "Spanish modern."

If someone is looking to incorporate these features in their brand new dream home, there are some of the major features to incorporate to give it the full aesthetic.

Just to mention: amazing curb side appeal, rustic pavers, wood beams and weathered stone. All offers to make each house unique

The mediterranean house plans are available from contractors, inside home blueprint books or can even be found online.

Interior ideas

Mediterranean House Design

When incorporating house design on the inside, the main idea is to use warm colors and a lot of texture. The interior often resemble those of the elements of the sky and the ocean so many of the Mediterranean features inside a home boast terra cotta shades and yellows and oranges.

To add texture within the home, people often paint in layers, using a drywall compound underneath to add to the depth. It has been suggested to even hand rub the paint or glaze onto plaster to add more.

Furniture differs from formal to functional and many of the pieces are short and on legs that are very ornate.

Tile is another common feature of the inside of a Mediterranean home, particularly mosaic. People often use mosaic tiles into their kitchens and bathrooms, including the showers, backsplashes and counters.

This design is often used on mirrors or tops of tables to further incorporate the Mediterranean or Spanish feel. To take the mosaic feel one step further, the look is often incorporated into floors or walls through the use of stencils to give a similar appearance.

Many accessories inside a home also include bronze vases, terra cotta pottery, rustic urns, and wrought iron designs with touches of gold throughout the home.

Through the use of many different types of style to incorporate the Mediterranean feel, there are several ways to incorporate Mediterranean house design both on the inside and the exterior of the home. Shopping around to help tie the feel all together will soon tie the external design together with the inside.
