Before you install sheetrock, the building inspector must approve the frame, plumbing, electric, and insulation work.
Make sure there is a vapor barrier over the insulation on the outside walls.
Measure the walls and ceiling area you plan to cover to determine how much sheetrock to order.
Sheetrock comes in 4’X 8’ sheets and 4’ x 12’ sheets. You can use either one on the ceiling, however, 12’ sheets are harder to handle.
8’ sheets are best for the standard 8’ wall. It is much easier and faster to install sheetrock if you have another person to assist you.
Tools you will need to install it include:
Supplies consist of:
Some sheets of sheetrock will not have to be cut, but where there are plug ins, switches, windows, and doors you will need to take measurements and cut the sheetrock accordingly.
To install sheetrock, butt each one up against the other.
Place nails or sheetrock screws every 16” to 24” on every ceiling joist and wall stud.
Install the sheetrock on the ceiling first and then on the walls.
After completion take the sheetrock tape and put over every seam and corner.
For corners, you can purchase metal covers that are faster and protect them better, but that is a personal choice. Both tape and metal installation are similar.
As you place the sheetrock tape on the seams, apply mud over the tape with a spatula until the seam is well covered.
If you choose to use metal corners, use small nails to hold it in place and then cover with sheetrock mud.
Dab it over the nails or screws and then allow plenty of time to dry.
If there are any indention on the seams or nails repeat the process as needed.
Take the rasp or sandpaper and lightly go over each seam and nail hole.
Mud should be even with the sheetrock with no indention or bulges.
Wipe off the excess dust.
Your sheetrock installation is now complete and ready to cover.
