How to Install a Kitchen Sink

Simple step-by-step guide on how to install a kitchen sink.

The sink is a crucial part of the kitchen and must be securely fitted and watertight.

Some kitchens units come with pre cut profiles and pre fitted sinks, those which don’t need to be installed separately which can be done by any do it yourself.

The first thing to do is measure the sinks profile and then transfer the profile, using pencil ideally onto the worktop unit surface

Cutting out the sink profile.

You will need a drill and a jigsaw for this part. Begin by drilling a hole at each corner of the profile on the worktop unit.

Then take the jigsaw insert the blade and begin to cut along the profile you have just drawn. Take your time... at this stage to avoid mistakes and more importantly prevent any accidents.

Once the profile cut out is it’s time to install a kitchen sink. To avoid awkwardness later attach the taps to the sink and secure them in place before installing it on the worktop.

Place the sink onto a sealing strip, which prevents water leaks, and secure to the underside using fastening clips that should have been supplied by the manufacturer. Trim the sealing strip with a Stanley knife and and sand down the rough edges where needed with sandpaper or a piece of emery tape.

The last task with the sink installation is to link up the service pipes and waste water duct.

To the underside of the sink fit a bottle trap with an adjustable inlet to the waste pipe through the wall and the connect this to the yard gully.

Link the taps up to the water supply to complete the installation.

Once completed run a quick test to check all is working adjust the pressure, if necessary, directly from the mains stop tap.
