For installing tile we will need to get some strong adhesives.

Premixed thin set mortar mix works well for bathroom and kitchen tiles and is available at most hardware stores.

Tiles can be laid in any type of configuration the easiest is to follow the alignment of the walls in the room they can provide a guide and reference point to ensure the tiles are laid uniformly.

• Tape measure, square, spirit level and a chalk line
• Tile cutter or a tile saw
• Notched trowel and thinset

• Buckets and knee pads and eye protection

Step One - Preparation And Layout

If you are working on a timber floor fix the flooring down securely and tap in any nail heads which may be showing.

Once your happy with the working surface the room are should be measured and the tiles should then be purchased.

Buy slightly more than you require accounting for any discrepancies along the way.

Begin by laying some of the tiles from the corner of the room in a dry run placing spacers between each of the tiles.

Try and use as many full tiles to reduce the work required in cutting them to get them to fit a later stage during the installation.

The next stage is to begin fixing the tiles in place securely. Mix up some thin set and then apply with the notched trowel.

Portland cement with a little latex additive works just fine for this.

Trowel the mortar to get the wavy lines so we get a good seal to the sub floor.

Carefully lay the tiles in place adjust and tap them using the so that they align neatly with the spirit level.

The corners and walls will require some special cuts but it’s better to start in the center of your floor so the special cuts are less obvious.

The tile can be cut with a tile cutter pretty easily when it’s just flooring we’re doing. There will be mostly straight cuts.

Grouting is the process of filling a sandy mixture of mortar into the joints and cracks of the tile.

This mixture dries and becomes really hard and smooth. There are a few tricks to grouting tile to make it easier.

If you have a really big job to do then you may want to buy dry grout mix and water it down. or you may buy ready to use grout mix

Most grout mixes require you to let them sit for 10 minutes to cure after you have added water and mixed.

Getting an even mixture of grout with the same consistency throughout your grouting project can be a little tricky though.

The technique is to use apply small amounts of grout at a time.

Once you have compacted enough so that the grout is level with the tile clean off the excess grout using a damp sponge.

Allow plenty of time for the grout to set.
