When choosing the door ensure that it suits the architectural character of the rest of the house they come in many different styles and designs which can make selecting the right one, at times, slightly challenging.

They usually come down to three characteristics. The material most doors come in either softwood, hardwood, aluminum or plastic.

The door furniture needs to be chosen carefully so that the result is in keeping and harmonizes with the house. There is also the detailing to take into consideration. It is worthwhile selecting decorative and or functional glazed panels in order to provide interior illumination.

Once you’ve selected the door it’s time to install it so that it's safe, robust and easy to use. External doors must be secure so it's important to select suitable locks possibly a chain and other security devices during the installation.

The next task is to install a suitable frame on which the door can then be hung on. The frame must be rigid and set into the opening securely using nails or screws.

The frame must be made to measure and include all the features required to seal the doorway from water penetration. When fitting the frame wedge it in place then check it using a spirit level to ensure that it's central and square.

Once the frame is installed the new door must then be hung. It is important to know before hanging a door that they must have a clear all-round expansion allowance to prevent them from creaking. Most doors are hung on butt hinges, made in a range of sizes.

For a heavy door, it’s best to use three hinges. This helps to prevent warping and spreads the weight of the door.

Hinges are always hung first on a door, they must be recessed into the side surface. This can be done using a chisel and a set square. Once fixed in place the screws can then be inserted and the door can be hung in place.
