House framing detail for a building regulation application
The purpose of any framed building is to transfer the loads of the structure plus any live loads through members of the frame to a foundation.
This form of structure is usually clad externally with lightweight non-load bearing materials which form the envelope of the building. They provide comfort in terms of sound and thermal insulation.

Timber framing
Form work, partitions and building structure formed from sections of timber.
Used throughout particularly on floors above ground level as it can provide a strong frame that has a good strength to weight ratio.
Also used in prefabricated housing including modular and kit homes.
Main beams
Span between columns and transfer the live imposed loads placed upon them through to the column.
Secondary beams
Span between and transfer their loadings to the main beams. Their function is to reduce the spans of the floors or roof and to provide intermediate support.
Tie beams
Internal beams spanning between columns at right angles to the direction of the main beams.
Studwall
Semi structural wall that forms the internal layout. Built in situ they comprise several lightweight features which make them robust and quick to install.
They can be fully insulated and fitted with plumbing and electrical ducting.
Wall plate
The wall plate is a buildings element which makes the structure rigid. They are attached to the top of the wall and provide a sturdy junction to which roof framing can be joined.
