Info on foundations and sub-structures
by: Adam

The foundations are used to support the extermnal structure of a building. They are laid apporximately 3ft below the ground level. They are made from reinforced concrete. They come in many different forms.

There are strip foundations raft foundations and pile foundations. Most houses will use one of these in their construction. Architects will specify the type of foundation after assessing the ground type and the weight of the building.

Things to look out for when laying the foundations are former coal mines and excavated voids if you come across these expect to spend a lot more at the initial stages of your build.

An additional thing to look out for is archaelogy. Most buildings in areas of historic interest will have to have the ground assessed by an archaelogist before work can begin.

Hope this helps.
